Position: Freelance Marketing & Communications Officer
Location: Remote but based in Scotland
Hours: 3 hours per week
Pay: £30,000 pro rata
Reports to: Chair & Board

About The BIT COllective
The mission of the BIT Collective is to catalyse progressive and intersectional structural change in the Scottish Folk and Traditional Music community. The objective of BIT Collective is to support, platform and advocate for projects by women, non-binary, and trans musicians, or by their clear allies.

Focusing on the Folk and Traditional music scene in Scotland, the Organisation will:

  • Research equity and inequality issues

  • Discuss inequality issues

  • Facilitate learning for the public, organisations and individuals about inequality issues

  • Address equity and equality issues through the media

  • Inspire progressive action towards intersectional gender equality

In this way, our vision is to increase the recognition, achievement, safety and enjoyment of an ever more diverse set of people in the Scottish Folk and Traditional music scene

Role Overview

The Marketing Officer will play a crucial role in increasing awareness, engagement, and attendance for The BIT Collective’s events and initiatives. Working closely with the Development Officer and Board, this role will primarily focus on promoting The BIT Collective’s activities through email marketing, social media, and print materials. The ideal candidate will be proactive, creative, and detail-oriented, with a passion for traditional music and arts, alongside strong design skills to ensure impactful and visually compelling marketing campaigns.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Email Marketing

  • Develop, design, and send out regular email newsletters to The BIT Collective's mailing list, promoting upcoming events, news, and initiatives.

  • Segment the email list to tailor communications to different audience groups and ensure maximum engagement.

  • Track and report on email open rates, click-through rates, and other key metrics to assess the effectiveness of campaigns.

2. Social Media Management

  • Manage The BIT Collective’s social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) to promote events, share relevant content, and engage with followers.

  • Create and schedule posts that align with the organisation’s messaging and objectives, while encouraging participation in events.

  • Monitor and respond to comments, messages, and interactions on social media platforms.

3. Print Marketing

  • Assist with the design and creation of print materials, including flyers, posters, and event programmes, ensuring alignment with The BIT Collective’s branding.

  • Work with external printers or other team members to ensure timely production and distribution of print materials.

4. Event Marketing

  • Collaborate with the Development Officer to promote events and initiatives, ensuring that all promotional materials are aligned with the event’s objectives.

  • Develop strategies to increase attendance at in-person and online events, including targeted advertising and cross-promotion with relevant organisations.

5. Design & Branding

  • Have access to and use design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) to create graphics, social media posts, and marketing materials. 

  • Ensure all marketing materials maintain The BIT Collective’s branding guidelines and visual identity.

6. Reporting & Analytics

  • Track the performance of marketing campaigns across different channels (email, social media, print) and provide regular updates to the Board.

  • Suggest improvements and adjustments based on the results of campaigns to optimise marketing efforts.

7. Collaboration & Other Tasks

  • Work closely with the Development Officer and Board to ensure alignment on messaging, strategies, and timelines for marketing campaigns.

  • Support the wider team on any ad-hoc marketing tasks and contribute to other organisational initiatives as needed.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience in marketing, communications, or a related field, preferably within the arts or non-profit sector.

  • Marketing strategy development.

  • Strong copywriting, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Access to, and proficiency in design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) for creating marketing materials.

  • Experience with web and email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Squarespace).

  • Ability to manage time effectively and work to tight deadlines in a remote setting.

  • A passion for traditional music and the arts, with a keen understanding of Scotland’s cultural scene.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
